Egypt is divided into 27 governorates (muhafazah).
A Governorate is administered by an appointed governor (Muhafez), and was formally known as Province (Muderiya). A Governorate is at the top level of the Five-tier local administration.
While the President appoints the Governors, the Prime Minister appoints Chiefs of Markazes, Cities and Districts; and the Governors appoints their respective Chiefs of Villages.
